Home and school at work
Read the information about the activities that parents can do at home to enhance emergent literacy in your reader (Peregoy and Boyle 2008) and explain how home environments, including
those in which a language other than English is spoken, can nurture
literacy development.
Home is the first contact that toodlers have with literacy , at home is where students start spoting letters , signs , and symbols this is the beginning of lecture , parents unintentionally help little children to acquire learning by posting notes on the fridge, letting the Bible opened, having book, magazine , and newspaper in reachable places where they can start looking the first words and figuring out the meaning of them.As parents to help our children and provide them a better enviroment for reading and literacy we should have a mini library with books and magazines, phone books , playcards, encyclopedias and all material that will be helpful according to their age.Bilingual books in those homes in which children are involved in , it is the best tool to reinforce what they learn at school not only written material, audiovisual also willl be a good aid. Josue Noel Calix Vargas (Joshua)
Parents influence kids in a very big way, since they’re their role models, their heroes its important parents create a safe learning environment for kids. They can nurture literacy by constantly reading to their kids, since they are in the womb. Children grow up with a love for literature in this way. If they read in another language, other than L1, children acquire a second language. They will not talk to perfection but they will be exposed and will find it easier to learn when they get to school. Another way to help as parents is exposing the child to a second language environment, with music, movies, posters, coloring books, games, etc…
Home is the first school in which children start their learning process. Parents and other family members become a powerful model for children, every time they get a pencil and paper to write, when they read the newspaper, a magazine, or a book it awakens the the interest of children to do the same actions. When children go out with their parents they start observing the media propaganda, stop signs and ads in the street and start making questions of their meanings. Children invite modeling, scaffolding, and explicit instruction from parents and siblings that provide a natural mean of language and literacy development at home. Many of them can get a powerful learning experience when their parents or siblings read them a book out loud, making pauses asking them what is going to happen next in the story, when they color coloring books or watch movies or play games in the iPads, it doesn't matter if its in their native language or second language, for early literacy concepts to develop, exposure to literacy events is what matters most, not the language of the written materials or the language in which the discussion around written materials take place. This will help children build knowledge of the world. Dayanna Reynaud
A child's home environment can nurture literacy development through different ways. Before birth, parents can play music (classical, jazz, lullabies, sounds of nature, etc) and talk to the baby. Once the baby is born it is very important to stimulate him/her since day one. How? Talking to the baby, explaining him/her what you are doing (baby talk is impossible to avoid, but for literacy development purposes a nice/clear and good vocabulary conversation is a must!), singing to him/her, reading, placing a colorful/attractive hanging mobile on the crib which can also play music. Allowing the baby to crawl is absolutely important as well. Stimulation can also be given by age appropiate games, age appropiate books, age appropiate toys and videos (not be abused of them). It is also very important that there is at home a "corner" or space that the child knows that he/she has books, pencils, colors, an easel maybe or white paper where he is allowed to draw, write, color in a freely manner (this avoids scribbles and drawings on walls, furniture, etc). Another important way to nurture literacy development is to have in our daily schedules, perhaps after dinner, some family talk (tertulia in spanish) in which we share how our day went, what we did, what we missed, express our feelings, something that made us feel happy, sad, embarrased, etc and everyone in the family gets to participate. Some reading time is also absolutely necessary, where reading is encouraged and reading importance is modeled and learned/acquired. In a few words, home is our first school and parents are our first educators! Anna Cristina Torres R.
I believe that parents and other family members play a very important role in the acquisition of literacy skills. Parents are their child's first teachers, and early literacy skills are based on activities and experiences that children have in their home. So I think that the importance of parents in the acquisition of literacy skills cannot be overstated, it is critical.
One of the most important things that parents can do is to read to their child, read with and to their child, often, with a variety of materials. Children who are learning how to read typically love literacy experiences; it's a time to cuddle, it's a time to inform, and it's a time for warmth and affection between parents and children. This is something that parents can really participate in and help their child with.
The first school for children become from their homes that helps in the way to encourage the development of emergent literacy is showing them .with stories books, colorfull books, playing songs with an easy vocabulary they can learn. having a reading time before time to bed, reading importance is modeled and learned acuired. Its very important that parents and family members been included in every activities to suppor the emergency literacy for each child . Every environment for them is important to get a new knowledge as a secong language acquisition . Elda Lones
Literacy development is important for kids because in this age can learn easily like a parents, we must to encourage them having fun, reading stories books, colorfull books and other kind of books related with the kind of knowlegde they can get is incredible in the early age . other way they can learn is taking them out and asking about something interesting for them as a toys, vegetables, candies, fruits, and sumary every moment they can have the opportunity to teach them in a funny way let´s do it.why? because our home is the first school to get a new language as a emergent literacy. A home environment rich in literacy, in whatever language, helps young children acquire early- on reading skills, such as the ability to know that those lines in a paper represent ideas and that they communicate things….. Reading to young children, and making those moments fun will help children become: Good Readers. Exposing kids early to print and daily reading: reading signs to them, playing word games, showing stories with large pictures and print, … can nurture literacy development. Parents must be made aware of this, so as to keep their eyes open to everyday opportunities that may benefit their children not only at home but everywhere they go. This will probably work well as most parents which to give their children the best chances for a better life, possible. Awareness is the first step, as teachers we must impress this on our parents. It is well known that human beings are able to learn before birth, and parents can use this ability to develop early literacy, music, Reading stories, can be a good resource to introduce children to knowledge. As babies and toddlers, toys, exercises, bedtime stories, family conversations, trips to different places, educational games, healthy diet, and many other activities can help them acquire, in an affective and loving environment, the needed skills to develop early literacy, no matter the mother language. Parents that choose a bilingual education for their children can promote that by introducing games, stories, technology according to their age, in the new language. As first and main tutors, as role models, parents and families are deeply involved in children´s early literacy at home, along with the teachers at school. Cynthia Garay
Children learns early literacy before they go to pre-k, they are exposed to environmental print in the form of signs, announcements in store windows, magazines, supermarket,etc.. and parents can take advantage of this opportunities to show thier kids all about print and they will learn and understanding also by watching their parents using print. As in the example of the video, the little girl Mira learned early literacy by her mommy she read her stories for kids and any print she saw when she was shopping with her daughter. the same thing parents can do with their kids and this will help them alot when they start at pre-k, because they will have certain knowledge about it and will by easier for them to learn more from emergent literacy. They also will show interesting in writting from an early age, they even play that they are reading and writing because they are understanding what does that means. Children see that written language is a wonderful tool, and they want to own the mystery of such powerful magic. When children become involved in using literacy in their homes and communities, they with begin to form ideas about the forms and functions of print, that is were emergent literacy begins. Danelle Ortega
Parents need to have present that they are the model their children will follow since they are in the womb. If parents wants to develope emergent literacy and literacy development they have to approach every oportunity in wich they can teach their kids about literacy, about print. For borned babies parent can help with a lot of activities like for example using written stories, teaching babys written words so they can grew up their vocabulary by the print. For grew up children parents créate a literacy environment in the daily life, like for example giving kids the example of Reading the newspaper, teach children about written messages in the refrigerator, teaching children about how literacy is usefull by technology as phone cells, computers etc.. Another important tool for Parents is using games for teaching kids about literacy, like for example teaching by playing how to communicate through a phone toy, like for example playing about how to communicate using a computer toy etc... Parents have to involve creativity and develope in their children the practice of literacy and print by explainig them the importance of it in current life.
Parents can help the children to develop early literacy using every opportunities at home to teach them like for example, with toys, with music to learn sounds and images, also with shopping lists, when they are older, parents can involve children in short story -telling, in that way, they begin to learn letters and make sounds to lead them into Reading and writing, and also have fun together. In learning a second lnguage this is very important. Josue Alejandro Zuniga
Home is the place that has been called our first school, the reason of this, is because our house is the place where we acquired or we are stimulated to learn many things such as talking, behaving etc. Parents are the responsible to encourage babies to learn a language since they are in theirs mother´s bellies using different techniques, methods instrument and in that way children learn through listening music, reading stories books according to their level, playing educational games, opening thier mind throuhg a list of exercises that helps children to learn, remind and practice what parents teach them every day. To sum up, family plays a good roll in teaching their children in an indirect way, so when children go to school they already have acquired a previous knowledge of the world that sorrounds them.
“Home is the first school”, parents need to be involved in the nurturing of their children literacy development, most of the time they do even without knowing it. It is appropriate to suggest parents to continue explaining the kids simple questions that appear in their early years of life, some of them like the meaning of some signs, the brand of the cars, and if they want to go further include them in some naturally occurring literacy activities, like reading some stories together, making the grocery list, drawing the sequence of events that happened during the day, even for some of them ask them to explain a brief reading. At the school is so important to celebrate their personal progress, emphasizing those applicable to literacy development.
Definetely, parents or caregivers take an important role in promoting early literacy. We all know that young children's literacy development begins before kindergarten,so parents have a great chance to experience wonderful moments with their kids as well as they are introducing them to the wonderful world of literacy. Some of the activities recommended for parents are: modeling ways of writting such as posting notes on the refrigerator, making grocery lists or allowing them to use crayons or any other type of writing materials; another way is by answering children's questions about print and finally but not least important is reading aloud to children. as teachers we ought to guide our students' parents in continuing the process, while in the classrooms enhace their prior literacy experience.
There are many activities that parents can do at home to enhance emergent literacy, they (the parents) will find literacy materials of various kinds in most homes:magazines, newspapers, CD or tapes labels, TV guides, story books (find the time to read to them and point to the words), shopping lists, paper and writing tools. These activities on which the child is exposed at young age will nurture literacy development. Even in families in which a language other than English is spoken perceptive teachers will find ways to recognize and build on children´s home language and literacy experiences, by transforming that deficit.
